Dumpster Diving

Dumpster Diving Intro

I wanted to introduce this topic as we mentioned it in the "about us" section that we will cover and share our experiences regarding dumpster diving.

So first and foremost, we got introduced to the whole concept by a highly informative and inspiring documentary called: "Taste the Waste". (http://tastethewaste.com/info/film).

We watched it in 1000Fryd (an alternative vegan bar/ cinema/ event-place/ folkekokken here in Aalborg: http://www.1000fryd.dk/), and on the way home as the documentary evening finished around 10pm, Lukas turned to me on the bike and asked: "Shall we try to do this?" I am like: "You mean now??". And so we did.
There is a Netto next to us and behind the shop there is the dumpster. We approached it, shy and uncertain, is it ok what we are doing(???)... As we opened it, was full with perfectly fine, packed fruits, veggys, bread, and a lots of meat and milk products. Just as we saw it in the movie 30 min before.
Very mixed feelings...
The feeling of disappointment that it can happen. Firstly the unnecessary death of so many animals AND plants and on the top of that they end up processed, packed, puffed up in a dumpster... And of course the lots of people around the world who have no sufficient amount of food, whereas we throw out perfectly fine food, just because a new delivery arrived or one out of the packed oranges went bad... Of course, on the other hand, its a hunting feeling. Its like "shopping" for free. So as I said very mixed feelings... Still not sure how I feel about it, but certainly doesn't feel better to leave it rot in the dumpster. :(

So we started it last year October, and we app go every second day. We find at least something every time and we also discovered dumpsters of KIWI and Aldi, a bit further from us.

Besides the hilarious amount of food (we only take veggys, fruits, and bread) we also found crazy amount of plants, design food containers, a sushi cutlery set, a coffee machine, clothes, creams, a case of beer (we gave it away to another dumpster diver as we don't drink),  pillows, etc etc...

And at last I must mention the 3 rules of dumpster diving :) :

1. Don't take more then what you can eat/what you need (other divers may/will come after you).
2. If you bump into another diver, wait for your turn.
3. Leave the place tidy!! (Don't give away the secret to muggles)

And leave you with some pictures of our recent findings:
